  3. Normally a poll such as this is subjective. However, in 1986, Mark
  4. Soltau instituted a yearly feature in the San Francisco Examiner called
  5. "The Top 20 Golf Courses in Northern California."^
  6. ^
  7. A 45-member panel of golfing experts and enthusiasts contributes to
  8. the selection process. Participants have included professional golfers
  9. George Archer, Dan Forsman, Roger Maltbie, Johnny Miller, Nathaniel
  10. Crosby and Julie Inkster; golf course architects Robert Trent Jones,
  11. Jr. and Ronald Fream; former United States Golf Association
  12. president Frank "Sandy" Tatum and current USGA president Grant
  13. Spaeth.^
